Plasma Seed Treatment


The non-equilibrium plasma treatment of seeds has recently emerged as a simple and highly effective alternative to traditional pre-sowing seed treatments such as physical scratching or etching, heat treatment and chemical treatment using acids. Plasma seed treatment directly exposes seeds to a high voltage plasma discharge which includes a bombardment from ions, oxygen radicals, nitrogen radicals and an assortment of charged particles. Plasma treatment leads to seed coat erosion leaving etched or eroded surfaces. The altered seed coat becomes oxidized which in tern increases permeability to water and nutrient uptake. Seed surfaces are efficiently decontaminated and sterilized of chemical and biological growth inhibitors.

Plasma seed treatment has been demonstrated to greatly improve all aspects of germination and post germination plant growth efficiency by ensuring that each seed treated is in the best possible physical condition prior to sowing. The efficiency improvements are represented by increases in percentage of seeds to germinate (5% to over 30%) as well as the germination time rate which has seen time reductions ranging from 20% to 50% depending on species. The elimination of growth inhibitors provides significant improvements in individual plant health and vigor, these attributes contribute to increases in the quality and volume of harvest.

GreenPath Industries is the exclusive owner and manufacturer of the NitroPonicsTM Seed Treatment System. The NitroPonicsTM System is a patent pending non-thermal plasma seed treatment technology which is designed to drastically improve plant growth efficiency. The NitroPonicsTM Seed Treatment System operates using a common 125 volt AC outlet and can operate in a dry plasma mode or with water. The dry plasma mode of operation uses the active plasma field to modify the seed coat and eliminate growth inhibitors. The dry plasma mode is ideal for the treatment of seeds that will be stored until a later grow season. Wet plasma seed treatment includes all the same capabilities as the dry plasma treatment but also doses the seeds with low ph plasma treated water which also includes various nitrogen compounds such as NO, NO2, NO3, HNO2 & HNO3 all of which provide a kick-start to the germination process. Seeds treated with wet plasma should be planted within 24 hours of their treatment.

Both dry and wet plasma seed treatments are done so using the NitroPonicsTM seed treatment bags. These bags can hold up to 250 3mm size seeds. With the seeds securely placed in the treatment bag it is next affixed to the NitroPonicsTM plasma generator, a timer switch is rotated to the desired setting between 2 and 5 minutes and the rest is automatic.

Sunflower Seed Test

This test was conducted between April 4th and April 12th of 2017.
The sunflower seeds used all came from the same package of heirloom seeds provided by a private company. The test includes 3 groups of seeds that included control, dry plasma treated seeds and wet plasma treated seeds. Test was conducted in a dark room kept at 74 deg F for 9 days. Seeds were placed in petri dishes with a layer of wetted cotton.

  • Control seeds were provided only distilled water
  • Dry plasma seed group was exposed to an air plasma discharge of 10K volt AC for 2 minutes and provided distilled water
  • Wet plasma seed group was exposed to an air and water plasma discharge of 10K volt AC for 2 minutes and provided distilled water


Results
At the end of the 9 day test the lids were removed from the petri dishes and the plants were measured from the tip of the root to the end of the leaf.

  • Control seedlings had a 100% germination rate and measured an average of 20mm
  • Dry plasma seedlings had a 100% germination rate and measured an average of 30mm
  • Wet plasma seedlings had a 100% germination rate and measured an average of 56mm

Cucumber Seed Test

This test was conducted between April 4th and April 12th of 2017.
The cucumber seeds used all came from the same package of heirloom seeds provided by a private company. The test includes 3 groups of seeds that included control, dry plasma treated seeds and wet plasma treated seeds. Test was conducted in a dark room kept at 74 deg F for 9 days. Seeds were placed in petri dishes with a layer of wetted cotton.
